This classic American dessert goes far beyond pie filling. Try our take on this sweet treat over ice cream or mixed in with your morning granola.
Peel and cut the apples into small cubes (about 1/2 inch). Add to a large bowl.
Measure and add the lemon juice, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg to the apples and toss to coat.
Preheat the pan to 300°F/ 150°C (medium- low), then add the butter and allow it to melt completely.
Stir all the ingredients and then lower the temperature to 215°F/ 100°C (low) and cook the filling for 8- 9 minutes or until the sugar is fully dissolved and the aples are soft when poked with a fork.
Turn the burner off, then season with salt to taste. Serve immediately or refrigerate for later use.
